Soccer World Cup 2026: A powerful showcase for premium TV growth

With 48 participating nations, 104 matches, and the longest tournament in its World Cup history, the 2026 edition brought soccer to more consumers than ever before.

While the overall sales uplift was more measured than in previous tournaments, the event successfully generated demand in key soccer markets and created valuable opportunities for manufacturers and retailers to drive premium TV sales.

Pre-Kick-off Peak: Timing Strategy for Retail

Global TV sales accelerated noticeably during the tournament period, with participating countries achieving approximately +12% value growth and +6% unit growth in the first 29 weeks of 2026 versus the previous year.

The strongest performance came from markets with high soccer engagement and least time zone differences, demonstrating that the World Cup remains a highly effective demand trigger when paired with the right consumer audience.

One of the most actionable learnings from the tournament is the importance of timing. Demand built rapidly in the weeks leading up to kick-off and peaked around the start of the competition. The strongest sales weeks were the week before the tournament and the opening group-stage matches. Extended tournament length did not ramp up growth, as final weeks turned negative in sales growth.

For retailers and manufacturers, this reinforces a clear playbook: align inventory, promotions, and marketing investment with the pre-tournament buying window to maximize returns.

LATAM Growth: Regional Activation Strategies

Latin America emerged as the standout growth region of the 2026 World Cup, with triple-digit growth rates in peak weeks and double the pace of other regions. Strong soccer passion, favorable viewing times, and Argentina’s deep tournament run combined to create exceptional consumer engagement and TV demand.

The results highlight the growing importance of regional activation strategies. Markets with strong soccer and promotion can generate significantly higher returns from World Cup investments.

Capturing Value: Mini-LED & Large-Screen Demand

The most important takeaway from the World Cup 2026 is that the tournament continues to be a powerful catalyst for premium TV purchases. Consumers increasingly upgraded to larger screens, with 70-inch-plus models gaining share during the run-up to and opening weeks of the tournament. Premium technologies such as Mini-LED also benefited from heightened consumer interest, while average selling prices increased during the event period.

The future World Cup opportunity is clear: focus less on chasing volume and more on capturing value. The winners will be those that ensure availability of large-screen at affordable price, premium models, concentrate promotional activity around kick-off, and tailor investments toward the most soccer-engaged markets.

Norbert Herzog Head of Global Strategic Insights

“The WorldCup 2026 provided a clear message: Consumers don’t upgrade for technology alone, they upgrade for moments that matter. The winners will be those who combine premium innovation, precise timing, and local market activation to turn cultural moments into growth.”

“More than ever, the Soccer World Cup remains an essential event for TV sales – and a perfect opportunity to align new display technology with strong content. The leverage is higher when content production joins hardware to deliver the message on added value of technology.th This alignment will continue to present great marketing opportunities in the near future – looking at the next upcoming major sporting events: the 2028 European Championships in the UK and Ireland, and the 2030 World Cup on the Iberian Peninsula and in Morocco. Those who will be able to link these events with outstanding content and genuine technological experience will be able to sustain interest and growth.”
