Major Domestic Appliances 2026: From Price Pressure to Value Creation

The Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) market in 2026 is being defined by a more cautious consumer mindset. Rising global inflation, increasing from 3.3% at the beginning of the year to 4.6% in May, has placed additional pressure on household budgets. After a strong 2025, global market value growth has normalized, declining from 6.6% in the first five months of 2025 to just 0.1% during the same period in 2026.

A key driver behind this slowdown is China, the world’s largest MDA market. Following exceptionally strong demand generated by the trade-in policy introduced in 2024 and 2025, sales have declined against a highly elevated comparison base.

Excluding China, the picture is considerably more resilient, with market value growth reaching 3.5%, supported by strong demand across Latin America, emerging Asian markets, and the Middle East.

Innovation and Design Drive Regional Growth

Despite stable overall demand, the market remains under significant price pressure. Consumers are increasingly replacing appliances only when necessary rather than upgrading for new features. Promotional activity remains at historically high levels, but starts to fade. This shift is particularly impacting the upper-market price segment, while lower-priced products continue to gain share.

For manufacturers and retailers, success increasingly depends on delivering clear consumer value rather than relying solely on pricing strategies.

Energy efficiency remains the most influential purchase criterion for MDA, particularly in developed markets.

Design innovation is also gaining momentum. Solutions such as quasi built-in “Space Fit” refrigerators and premium matte finishes in cooking appliances demonstrate how aspirational design can rapidly move beyond niche audiences and attract broader consumer interest.

Climate-related demand patterns are creating additional opportunities. Heatwaves across Europe have driven exceptional growth for refrigerators as well as air conditioning, particularly in mobile solutions. In the month of May alone, mobile Air Conditioning products grew by more than 250% in value vs last year. New product formats, including mobile split air conditioners, are resonating with consumers by addressing traditional product limitations.

Smart Ecosystems Secure Premium Margins

Connected home ecosystems are becoming an increasingly important source of differentiation and value creation. Consumers show a growing willingness to pay a premium for appliances from brands that are already present in their households, creating attractive margin opportunities for ecosystem-oriented manufacturers and reinforcing premium positioning strategies.

This trend validates the industry’s continued focus on expanding the installed base of smart appliances. For many consumers, the full value of a connected ecosystem only becomes tangible when multiple devices are able to work seamlessly together. As a result, smart appliance adoption is not only driving individual product sales but also laying the foundation for stronger long-term customer relationships and higher ecosystem engagement.

At the same time, the market remains highly polarized. A small group of leading ecosystem brands has established a strong position through broad smart product portfolios and extensive category coverage, often concentrated in the premium segment. Beyond these players, a long tail of brands continues to compete with more limited smart offerings or a presence in only a few appliance categories. This creates a significant opportunity for manufacturers that can expand their ecosystem capabilities and deliver a more integrated consumer experience across the home.

Targeting Growth Pockets in a Polarized Market

While overall MDA volume growth is expected to remain stable throughout 2026, significant opportunities exist for manufacturers and retailers that align innovation with meaningful consumer benefits. Regional growth pockets, ecosystem-driven value creation, energy-efficient solutions and design-led differentiation will be key areas shaping success in the year ahead.
