Robotic lawn mowers continue on a growth trajectory

The days when people would look enviously over the fence at their neighbor’s immaculately maintained lawn are over. Today, every amateur gardener and garden enthusiast can afford a lush green, perfectly trimmed lawn – without hours of mowing or laborious edge trimming. This is made possible by intelligent robotic lawn mowers, which have long since evolved from tech toys into an established part of garden equipment.

What began as a trend has now become firmly established – according to NIQ, this is also reflected in current market developments. Demand for automated mowing solutions continues to grow unabated: Just in time for the start of the new gardening season, not only blades of grass are sprouting, but sales figures as well. They grew by 64 percent in the first four months compared with the same period of the previous year. As a result, the market, with total revenue of just under 125 million euros, is in a significantly better position than in the first four months of 2024 (approx. 76 million euros). During this period, the number of units sold also rose by a substantial 45 percent, corresponding to a total of 110,000 units.

Convenient, efficient, sustainable – why smart robotic mowers are booming

There are many reasons for the success of robotic lawn mowers. One key factor: ease of use is now higher than ever before. The new generation of devices does without boundary wires that have to be laid with considerable effort and can be started and controlled very easily via an app. Instead of pages of operating instructions, today it’s: unpack, connect, start mowing – plug-and-play for the garden.

Thanks to advanced sensors and intelligent navigation, modern robots automatically detect obstacles, optimize their mowing route using AI, and adapt flexibly to the characteristics of the area. Many models work with GPS support and avoid unnecessary mowing – saving time and energy while protecting the lawn. At the same time, they integrate seamlessly into existing smart home systems and can be monitored and controlled remotely.

Sustainability meets high tech

The growing environmental awareness of many consumers is also contributing to the continued growth. The quiet, emission-free battery systems of modern robotic lawn mowers are not only good for the neighborhood, but also for the environment. Compared with gasoline-powered mowers, they operate more efficiently, more sustainably – and almost silently. And because they require significantly less maintenance, they also score highly in terms of long-term user-friendliness.

The future of the garden: autonomous, connected, versatile

What is already convenient today could become even smarter tomorrow. Initial concepts for multifunctional garden robots are already in development: models that can not only mow, but also remove weeds, collect leaves, or even perform soil analyses. The garden of the future is not only beautifully maintained, but also intelligently connected – opening up entirely new possibilities for everyone who would rather spend their free time enjoying themselves than doing garden work.
