AI-generated

Active Control Obsolete

It works in the background. It is independent and operates locally. It is available precisely when needed. It keeps everything to itself. It does not require a constant connection to the internet. We are talking about edge AI.

Edge AI is the technological foundation that runs artificial intelligence algorithms directly on end devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, wearables, smart home appliances or robots. Unlike traditional cloud AI-based systems, edge AI does not send data to a remote server for processing, but analyzes and processes it directly and locally where it is generated – at the β€œedge” of the network. This means sensitive data remains under the user’s sovereignty. In addition, the technology works almost in real time without an active internet connection. Through machine learning, devices adapt to daily routines in order to optimize household processes fully automatically.

The technology is entering a mature market: Smart living has moved beyond its niche in Germany: 46 percent of households there now use at least one building-related smart living device, as shown by the current β€œSmartLiving2Market” market study by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). Data and its processing remain at the place of use

When edge AI is used, there is no need to transfer large volumes of data to remote data centers, reducing response time to a minimum. The processes are more agile and stable because bandwidth limitations do not apply. This is particularly advantageous for mobile applications. Since no sensitive information is transmitted externally, legal data protection requirements can also be met directly within the device.

Edge AI in the smart home

The practical advantages of using edge AI become apparent in everyday interaction with modern voice assistants and smart home thermostats. For example, smart home functions such as controlling lights, roller shutters, room temperature or music can be activated and regulated. Intelligent thermostats learn from user behavior and local weather data, independently optimize energy management and thus reduce electricity and heating requirements. Privately used security components also benefit: smart cameras with edge AI analyze video streams locally, recognize faces and detect movements in real time. This allows them to alert homeowners to unusual and potentially security-relevant incidents without having to upload private video recordings to the internet.

Billion-dollar market with rapid growth

The potential of edge AI is reflected in global market figures. The U.S.-based market research and consulting company Grand View Research Inc. forecasts that the global edge computing market, starting from USD 30 billion in 2026, will reach a volume of around USD 120 billion by 2033, with an average annual growth rate of 22 percent. Β»Speed, local data storage and lower energy consumption, as well as low bandwidth requirements and low latency, make edge AI particularly attractive for use in the consumer and home electronics industry. In addition to edge AI applications for the smart home, the technology is also used in other areas such as self-driving vehicles, drones and robots. In view of these advantages, we expect rapid and positive market development.Β«
