In 2025, the portafilter machine market in Germany continues to experience dynamic development. While per-capita coffee consumption remains stable at a high level, preparation using portafilter machines is showing significant growth compared with the same period in 2024. Unit sales increased markedly by 37.8 percent compared with the same period of the previous year. In total, 200,000 portafilter machines had already been sold from January to August 2025.[1] This growth can be attributed above all to a changing user group and new product innovations.
From the beginning of the year to August, revenue from portafilter machines rose by 43.4 percent to just under 79 million euros.[2] These figures reflect not only rising demand, but also consumers’ increasing willingness to invest in higher-quality appliances.
The trend is moving away from simple entry-level models toward machines that offer more customization options and professional features. More and more coffee lovers see themselves as hobby baristas and value precise temperature control, pressure regulation, and a variety of extraction methods. This development is supported by a growing range of accessories and training opportunities that make it easier to get started with the demanding preparation of coffee using a portafilter machine.
In addition, sustainability is playing an increasingly important role: manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on durable materials and repair-friendly designs in order to reduce the ecological footprint. The trend toward regional and fairly traded coffee beans is also strengthening appreciation for the entire coffee chain – from bean to cup.[3]
“The portafilter machine has long been more than just a kitchen appliance,” comments Dr. Sara Warneke, Managing Director of GFU Home & Consumer Tech. “It is an expression of a conscious lifestyle and a passion for high-quality coffee preparation. This is also reflected in the sales figures.”
The market for portafilter machines therefore remains an exciting growth segment shaped by innovation, individuality, and sustainability – and one that has the potential to continue growing in the future.
