Smartphone sales 2022 in Germany:

More sales – almost three-quarters of all devices sold 5G-capable

Smartphones continued to be sales drivers on the German market in 2022, generating more than EUR 13 billion, an increase of nine percent. Following a drop in sales in 2019, more modest growth in 2020 as a whole with an increase of 3.3 percent to more than 11 billion euros and a rise of 6.3 percent to just under 12 billion euros in 2021, the rate of growth of smartphone sales in 2022 was even higher.

In terms of unit sales, 2022 shows a decline of three percent to just under 21 million units. The number of units had already fallen by 4.4 percent in 2021, compared with a rise of 1.8 percent in 2020. The average price continued to rise accordingly, from EUR 555 in 2021 by 14 percent to EUR 634 in 2022.

5G, the technology for new-generation superfast communications networks, is gaining further ground in the smartphone market in Germany. In 2022, for example, the latest 5G models accounted for 74 percent of units sold and 74 percent of sales.

“Smartphones continue to be extremely popular with consumers. They are open to technological advancements and adopt them fast. This is also shown by the large market shares of 5G devices. In addition, technological advances such as 5G functionality also lead to rising average prices in this case,” says Dr. Sara Warneke, Managing Director of the German industry organization gfu Consumer & Home Electronics GmbH.
