Home Electronics Market Index (HEMIX) Q1-3/2019

In the first nine months of 2019, the home electronics market was slightly down compared to last year –with strong sales in audio and video accessories and wearables, and growth for the large and small electrical appliance segments

The market for home electronics (HE) is represented by HEMIX, the Home Electronics Market Index. HEMIX has reached almost at the same level as this time last year, only slightly under the same period from January to September by 0.8%. The total sales volume has reached 29.1 billion euros in the first nine months of 2019.

Consumer electronics market performance

With a turnover of around 18.7 billion euros, the consumer electronics market recorded a 3.2% drop in sales from January to September 2019 compared to the same period last year. Consumer electronics (5.8 billion euros, down 6%) and private telecommunications (8.2 billion euros, down 3.9%) both recorded a drop in sales. Only the private IT products segment (around 4.6 billion euros, +2.1%) achieved growth.

In the entertainment segment, televisions generated a turnover of just under 2.5 billion euros (-9.4%) in the first nine months of 2019. The number of TVs sold declined by 2.6% to just under 4.4 million units. The average price of all televisions sold remained stable over the past 6 months at 564 euros. In the home audio segment, sales decreased by 8% to 679 million euros. In contrast, the audio and video accessories segment continued its growth trend throughout the first three quarters of 2019 to reach 852 million euros (+26%).

In the private telecommunications segment, core wearables saw a significant growth in revenue of 601 million euros, representing a 41% increase over the same period last year. The number of devices sold also increased (3.6 million units, +39%). Smartphones again suffered a decline in sales (-6.2%) to 7.4 billion euros. The number of smartphones sold fell to around 15.4 million (-6%), while the average price remained almost stable at 481 euros.

Significant increases in tablet device sales (+10.5 percent), mostly due to an increase in the average price, as well as desktop computers (+4.9%) and monitors (+12%) contributed to the overall growth of the private IT products segment.

Household electrical appliance market performance

Both segments in the household appliance market again showed a positive trend throughout the first nine months of 2019: Large electric appliances recorded a 2.1% increase in revenue to 6.5 billion euros, while sales of small electrical appliances grew by 7% to 3.9 billion euros.
